Snapshot of poet’s life on film By Sarla Donovan A documentary film about Lyttelton writer Ben Brown (above) has won an international award in Berlin. Félix Vaunois’ film Moko: A Film about a Maori Poet was last week selected as the winner of
the Berlin Student Film Festival Documentary Award. Described as the intimate story of a modern-day Maori poet, the seven minute film is a snapshot of Mr Brown’s life, exploring how the man and the poet intersect. He was “very impressed” with
what Mr Vaunois had made. Seeing yourself on screen was an unusual experience, he said, given the personal nature of the film. “Odd, but not unpleasant.” The award winning children’s author and poet has lived in Lyttelton for the past 17 years. Mr Vaunois said the award
was unexpected and “very exciting.” “I’m very proud, but at the end of the day, I got such a thrill working with Ben. He’s one of the most amazing characters I’ve ever met.” • Turn to page 5
By Andrew King POLICE HAVE used social media to quash rumours a serious crash between Barrys Bay and the Hilltop Tavern on Sunday was caused by a foreign driver. Senior Constable Anita Osborne posted on the Akaroa Buy Sell and Exchange and Community Notice Board Facebook page: “Before there is any speculation about tourist drivers and bad motorbikes, not that I expect anyone would jump to conclusions would they, the driver of the car admits driver error and was very co-operative – and he lives in Canterbury.” A 31-year-old motor-cyclist suffered life-threatening injuries when he collided with a car on the Christchurch Akaroa Rd at about 4pm. He suffered an “open book pelvis fracture” intensive care paramedic for Westpac Rescue Mike McLintock said. • Turn to page 5

No skate ramp during holidays
Fashion By Sarla Donovan SUMNER KIDS won’t have a skate ramp for the July school holidays. Sumner Green and Skate Group was hoping to reopen the temporary skate ramp last week, but the process of working through noise, legal and consultation issues has been slower than anticipated. Skate group member Kimberley Mossman (right) was disappointed. “It is frustrating as we were working towards July 1,” she said. However, it was important they followed correct procedures, to make sure all the boxes had been ticked, she said. “Although it is temporary, it has got to work for everybody. We don’t want to annoy anyone.” The temporary skate ramp at 36 Wakefield Ave was shut down on February 10 when it failed to comply with the city plan’s noise standards. Since then, the group has been working with the city council to find a place to put

In Brief NEW OWNER FOR BISTRO The Cornershop Bistro in Sumner has a new owner. Auckland chef Jugraj Singh bought the business in early June and will operate it with the help of his sister. The restaurant closed for a three week renovation on June 14. However, problems with the floor mean it will be closed for an extra two weeks. The new owners plan to keep many of the same dishes and will retain the name. They hope to reopen by the end of this month. QUAY CLOSURE Cyrus Williams Quay was closed on Monday as construction begins on the new, fully serviced walk-on marina. Public access to surrounding sites at Naval Point, including the public slip on Cyrus Williams Quay, will remain open. The affected section of Cyrus Williams Quay will be closed until April 2018.

$5k for youth trust Shoreline Youth Trust has received a $5000 grant to go towards a leadership development programme. The LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board approved the grant to go towards the Sumner-based trust. The programme aims to develop leadership skills in young people in the Sumner and Redcliffs area.

The road was closed for about three hours after the crash. Senior Constable Osborne thanked emergency services in her post. “It was full on for a while there and everyone was amazing,” she posted. Felix He made the Vaunois documentary while still a student at the New Zealand Broadcasting School last year. Originally from Auckland, Mr Vaunois fell in love with the port town while living in Christchurch. “It’s such a beautiful mix of industry and art. It seems an ancient idea to be a poet in today’s society but communities like Lyttelton enable this to happen.” The documentary was also entered in the Sundance Ignite Challenge in Utah, a competition for filmmakers between 18 and 24, where it was named in the top 25 out of 400 entries. Former oil trader finds reward
Your Local Views Teacher Richard Jolly is head of social science at Linwood College but in his former life, he was a London-based oil trader who travelled the world. Sarla Donovan talks to him about what a trader does and why he moved to Christchurch

Oil trader to social studies teacher – why the change? To do something worthwhile and bring up a family in Christchurch. I taught in Camp America for a year before oil trading and loved it. I wanted to go back to it; teaching students is very rewarding – and there’s not many oil trading jobs here. It sounds exotic. It is exotic. I travelled to many countries – the United States lots of times, Egypt and Russia and the Baltic States. I was based in London, but did a lot of work in Hamburg and Zug in Switzerland. It’s a great life, but if you have small children you never see them. I spent hours and hours oil trading
and realised one day, sitting at my desk that I was paying a nanny to take my daughter to the beach. That’s really when I decided to make the change. That was 14 years ago. We moved from Switzerland to New Zealand and I trained at the New Zealand Graduate School of Education. My wife Beth is from Methven but it wasn’t all her choice, she certainly wasn’t putting the pressure on to come back. What do oil traders need to be good at, what’s involved? You need to be good with people, good with numbers and good at making decisions. I’d make contacts in different countries, buy large quantities of oil, organise shipping, ship it halfway across the world, hedge the price using the futures market, talk to refineries to process it. So, you have to work with a lot of different people. Are there any similarities between the two jobs? Not a lot – the lunches are quite different! You’re still working with people though, that’s the same. So were you here during the

earthquakes? Yes . . . but I wish I wasn’t. How did they affect you? Not good. We lost our house in the February 2011 earthquake and like many, it took six years to get it replaced. Meanwhile, we moved 13 times, including one year back in the UK.

I was offered a job back in oil trading when we went back but chose to stay in teaching and worked in a very posh English public school, Dauntsey’s. So Linwood’s not the only school you’ve taught at? No, prior to the earthquake I worked at Catholic Cathedral College, which I very much enjoyed, and only left because my house was destroyed. I commuted in from Methven for a few months but then got a job at Mt Hutt
College followed by a spell back at Dauntsey’s. Did you grow up in the countryside back in the UK? I grew up in a town called Beaconsfield, just outside of London, and it was great but the town has now been swallowed by London commuters and is not really very nice now. Are your family still back in the UK? Yes, people are still around. My parents have lived in the same place for 52 years and I try to get back every year or 18 months. I also have four brothers over in that part of the world.

Did you attend a co-ed school like Linwood? No, I went to a boys grammar school; we were academics and rugby. The teachers wore gowns and it was very formal. The school was good for me, it got me into Cambridge University where I studied engineering. It was amazing – I was there for three years – we had our bicycles, played sport, rugby and hockey. And from there I won a scholarship to do my masters in the US, then became an oil trader. Your three kids must keep you pretty busy these days. Do you find time for
sports or hobbies? I sometimes think I run a taxi service; football, ballet, gymnastics. Weekends involve cheering my kids on in their sports and trying to get out myself for a hit of tennis or a round of golf. I think it’s important that we find time to balance our lives, it makes you a better parent and a better teacher. Where are you off to in the school holidays? We’re heading over to Australia for a family holiday. Very much looking forward to it.

Still no repairs to tile hazard By Caitlin Miles REPAIRS TO damaged pavers in Akaroa were not completed by the end of June as city council staff said they would be. After Sue Stewart, 67, tripped over cracked and uneven tiles on Beach Rd last month, she spray-painted them to point the hazards out to other people to stop them from having the same fate. City council staff said the repairs would be completed within the month – but as of June 30, they hadn’t been finished. Contractors had started the work, but the damaged areas had been blocked off and the broken paver removed. Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner said contractors were waiting for a series of “fine days” before the work could resume, and then it would be completed within a week. Cr Turner met with Ms Stewart two weeks ago to talk about the situation with

He has taken photos of other loose pavers and repairs that need to be carried out and has sent them on to the city council for contractors. Cr Turner said it was “timely” to get the repairs sorted before spring and summer when tourist numbers start to increase again.

National Bear Dyson gives intersection plan the green light & Doll Show
By Sarla Donovan PORT HILLS MP Ruth Dyson is “delighted” at plans to reprogram traffic lights at the St Andrews Hill intersection, designed to ease confusion for motorists. None of the three options presented for public consultation earlier this year were green lighted by the LinwoodCentral-Heathcote Community Board. The most popular and
option, favoured by 372 of 640 respondents, needed to be funded through the city council’s Long Term Plan, and the board felt it would be better to trial some alternatives in the meantime, due to the high level of concern from residents. Instead, the community board decided to change the light phasing, which will be trialled for three months and install signs on Bridle Path Rd to slow traffic. The changes will mean the

left arrow light at the Main Rd traffic lights will be reprogrammed to allow for vehicles wanting to turn right off St Andrews Hill Rd onto Bridle Path Rd a better chance to get across a lane. A karakia whakanoa by Kerepeti Paraone from Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke was followed by speeches from Mr Clarke, Deputy Mayor Andrew Turner and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga chief executive Andrew Coleman. The $3 million project is expected to be completed by the end of April next year.
“We have been delighted with the positive feedback, particularly from the local community, about the project,” Heritage Destinations general manager Nick Chin said. “The return of the timeball tower and timeball, which will drop each day as it did from 1876 to 2011, will fit nicely with the regeneration of the port town that is going on. Having a familiar sight on the Lyttelton skyline is important not only for the community, but (for the) country, given its strong maritime history.”

LOTS OF great things happen in Lyttelton. The recent Festival of Lights, an annual event, was one of them. So okay, it was so cold that your breath nearly froze on the way in and out of your lungs, but the place was humming and everyone had a great time. Well done to the Project Lyttelton team that made this happen again! A couple of other quieter but equally excellent things going on. We all know, love and miss The Timeball Station which has been part of our town from 1876 until June 2011. Just last week, there was a blessing and ceremonial sod-turning for the start of the reconstruction of the tower. This is such a massive and positive step forward. Lots of money has been raised to see the timeball and the tower back again – in order of $3 million. So much of the original structure has been carefully deconstructed, labelled and stored that it is going to be “original” in large part. And at Canterbury Museum, the Lyttelton Redux opened. This is an amazing collection of significant figures from Lyttelton’s past, modelled by people who have a connection with that person. A true blend of history and future! The

We said: The cleanliness of the Lyttelton Tunnel is being questioned, with Lyttelton residents wanting more done to keep it clean You said: Jane McCulla – I have just read the article in the recent Bay Harbour News and I totally agree with Ken Maynard, the tunnel is a disgrace. I have used it regularly over the past seven years, and I remember it being much cleaner before the quakes. It has got really dirty and unkempt, I honestly think it needs to be cleaned more often. The ceiling is made of yellow tiles but it is just black now. A real shame. I say fix the cleaning machine or buy a new one. It’s not good for drivers going through breathing in the dust and grime . . . probably carcinogenic, never mind the look of it . . . not very inviting coming in to Lyttelton. Tony Carrabes – I think it’s the best maintained tunnel in the world because every weekday night the tunnel is completely closed to traffic for maintenance. Peter Thompson – Well, for those that don’t remember, they

used to have cleaning crews for the tunnel way back in time. I believe they used to have trucks with brushes on going through every few days to keep the tiles clean. Tracy Journée – I’ve lived
in Lyttelton for 23 years. Of course I have noticed how dirty the tunnel walls have been since the February and June 2011 earthquakes, who hasn’t. Clearly there has been a breach in the tunnel lining in places that has not been properly addressed yet,
maybe never will be. Perhaps if cleaning was more frequent it would have a better chance of keeping up with the grime. However, if extra cleaning schedules went ahead at this point in time, this would also mean more tunnel delays.
This would be just unbearable as we currently share the tunnel with so many port tankers and other dangerous goods vehicles that cannot do their original route around through Evans Pass to Sumner. The regular and constant delays that these vehicles have caused over the years have worn me out. Just recently there was a half-hour delay with the breakdown of a logging truck in the tunnel. I believe it has been poor form and poor planning from the port company and our city council to have not fast tracked this important alternate route out of Lyttelton through Evans Pass. So, while I couldn’t agree more that our once shiny and white Lyttelton Tunnel looks more like the armpit of a gorilla on steroids most days, I would also like to plead, please, no more delays in our tunnel until Evans Pass is safe for traffic again. •Turn to page 17

However, this is just another example of how city council maintenance levels have dropped significantly under this present administration. The city is a disgrace with unkempt parks and reserves, weeds choking the city – the whole place looks untidy. Regular maintenance is necessary to keep the city tidy and this is not happening. John Thacker – I drive though it on a regular basis. I think that the tunnel is kept in as good a state as possible. It is obvious the damage from the earthquakes and one can see where new seepage is now. Don’t think that it affects the usage at all. Maybe if the Sumner road was opened it might help? As for tourists . . . what tourists. It’s a busy working port with an enormous amount of heavy vehicles transiting it every day, 24 hours a day Jillian Nuth – It used to be spotless. The ‘toothbrush’ truck was always around. What the heck happened? Katrina Prendergast – The tunnel used to be cleaned in the early hours daily – I’m talking a good 20-30 years ago. So recently, a by-law was introduced that all vehicles had to have their loads covered because they were having to clean
‘x’ amount of tonnes every couple of days or so. Did this achieve anything? No. How about just get back to cleaning daily. We said: Traffic lights at the St Andrews Hill intersection will be reprogrammed to try and ease confusion for motorists You said: Graeme Nottage – I attended the community board meeting at which this was discussed. While Caitlin Miles’ report is accurate in that none of the three options was given the green light, it does not truly reflect the tenor of the discussion. Based on the discussion between board members, it would be fair to say that the board favoured option 2 (additional lights); the option which received most support from the community (372 of the 640 submissions). However, the board received advice from city council officers that funding for this option would have to be applied for through the council long term planning procedures; a delay which would not meet the level of concern from residents about the dangers of the intersection. Therefore, the board supported the proposal of Cr Templeton for a trial change to light phasing to hold traffic turning left
from Sumner into Bridle Path Rd. Combined with measures to slow traffic approaching the intersection in Bridle Path Rd, the trial has a chance of achieving the goal of improved safety for those using the intersection. If the trial allays public concern, and doesn’t have other adverse effects, obviously it will become a permanent solution. However, if it is not successful, the expectation is that the board would apply for the funding for additional lights. It is ‘devoutly to be wished’ that the trial is successful. Otherwise, a solution to this most confusing, and dangerous, of intersections is a long way off. Gary Iliffe – I am a dad that drops off kids at Mt Pleasant School every morning and picks them up each day. These are two of the busiest times of day and I can promise you that I see no problem at all with the intersection. People need to really stop wasting the city council’s time and have a little bit of patience. The longest I have had to wait in line coming down the hill has been one to two minutes behind, at most, or about five cars. I think if you did a study of it, even a one-eyed Cantabrian could use that intersection with ease. Well done to the city council and those at traffic control, as it’s better than it ever was. Perhaps a wee adjustment of the left arrow off Bridle Path Rd to go for a few seconds longer?

Fashion WITH WINTER upon us with all its vengeance, it might be a good time for those of you who have your boats at home to get them ready for the summer and ensure you comply with the new rules in the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016. On October 10, 2016, the new bylaw came into force, bringing with it a number of changes that impact on you as boaties. The first change, under part five, relates to the wearing of life jackets. This is a big one for personal safety. Prior to the change, some of you in your dinghies, kayaks, canoes and paddle boards were allowed to carry a life jacket if you were under way and had made a conscious decision that it was safe to do so. Our new bylaw has taken that decision out of your hands and
you are now required to wear a life jacket at all times when under way on a vessel 6m long or less. This includes paddle boarders except when physically involved in riding breaking waves – note a leg strap must be attached. The second change you might like to get on to over the winter, if you haven’t already, is that your vessel needs to be identified. Part 20 of the Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016 applies here. News Call out for volunteers
Cup to honour football great
NEARLY 1000 volunteers are needed to help run the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018. The event, which is expected to bring about 10,000 people to the city, would combine 10 sports over April. Event director Peter McDermott said they were calling for volunteers to help run the event and boost the visitor experience for both national and international guests. Roles will include umpiring, refereeing, scoring, or setting up equipment, among others. Volunteers must be over 18, available for a minimum of three shifts in April, able to attend three training sessions, subject to police vetting and be able to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. Volunteers will be provided with branded clothing, meal vouchers, training, a certificate of appreciation and an invitation to a thank you function. •Applications to join the volunteer team close on October 1, with the first training session scheduled for the end of that month. FOOTBALL great Steve Sumner will be remembered at the Christchurch Casino Golden Oldies Sports Celebration 2018, with teams to play for a trophy in his name. The inaugural Steve Sumner Cup will be unveiled at the week-long Golden Oldies World Football Festival, as part of the overall event that will run throughout April. Golden Oldies Football manager for the event and former All Whites captain, Earle Thomas, said it was a privilege to be the first event to honour Sumner’s contribution to football. “We are extremely grateful to Steve’s family for allowing us to name the cup for the first division competition at Golden Oldies World Football Festival in his honour.” Sumner captained the All Whites to their first ever world cup finals appearance in Spain in 1982, and was synonymous with Christchurch United in the 1970s and 80s. He died in February after a long battle with prostate cancer. “The Sumner family want to keep Steve’s legacy alive and are happy for the Golden Oldies event to name the cup in his

Win puts Bays another goal closer to MPL title By Gordon Findlater FERRYMEAD BAYS have the Mainland Premier League title within their grasp after a dramatic 3-2 win over Coastal Spirit at the weekend. Bays trailed 1-2 with five minutes remaining, scoring two late goals in a remarkable comeback. Coastal took the lead when Guillermo Schuhmacher scored two goals in the first half. His second six minutes before the break was a contender for goal of the season. Trailing 0-2 at half-time, Bays made two changes and pulled a goal back on the hour when Coastal scored an own goal. Bays dominated the final period. Jacob Allen chipped coastal keeper Eddie Ashton to level the score with five to play. Ashton then brought down Mark Peers in the area, which earned him a second yellow card. Coastal striker Jordan Ball took over the gloves but could not prevent Andreas Wilson scoring from the resulting penalty, which sealed the win for Bays. The win means that Bays are two points behind Cashmere Technical with a game in hand. The two teams meet in the next round of the MPL on July 22. Both Cashmere and Bays have won four MPL titles and are looking to become the first club to claim five.

Nicholson makes NZ school team to tour Singapore By Amelia Christensen-Rose MT PLEASANT’S Britneylee Nicholson has been named in the New Zealand secondary school girls’ football team to travel to Singapore at the end of September. She will play two games against the Singapore women’s national A side and two games against its women’s club champions at Jalan Besar Stadium. “It’s a good opportunity to form a really good team and culture,” Nicholson, 17, said. “When I first got the email late at night, I went around the house yelling and waking everyone up, I was so excited. I just felt all the hard work I had put in had paid off.” Nicholson, who attends St Andrew’s College and plays club football for Coastal Spirit, is one of four Canterbury players in the squad, alongside Lily Bray, Emma Clarke and Tahlia

The 24-5 score line would indicate Sumner were never challenged at Sheldon Park on Saturday. However, Dodgson believes the team has much to work on going into their final round-robin game of the season. “We didn’t compete and I was very concerned to see our scrum going backwards. We were off about five per cent” said Dodgson. South African No 8 Dylan Nel was once again star of the show, scoring two of his side’s four tries and maintaining his position as the competition’s

top scorer with 13 this season. Nel was the first to cross the line before first-five Nik Cumming put winger Willie Sakura through in the corner to give Sumner a 12-0 advantage at the break. A win over Linwood on Saturday would seal Sumner’s spot at the top of section two, setting up a play-off match for the Hawkins Plate with the bottom placed team from section one. Potentially their last home game of the season, Sumner will hold their annual sponsors day and ladies day events at St Leonards.

Before the night time walk many families met at the preschool to enjoy some dinner and get the children all rugged up before taking off for a walk. The children enjoyed hot chocolates on their walk.

New treatment for fungal nails Feet First, the long-established podiatry clinic in Upper Riccarton, now has a much more efficient and effective means of dealing with the problem of fungal nails, thanks to a new machine they recently obtained from Britain, where it was designed and trialled. Clearanail is a procedure where the Podiatrists use a machine to make tiny holes in the nail without affecting the nail bed – a completely pain-free procedure that then allows the topical application of antifungal solution to directly reach the problem area. Fungal nails may cause the toenail to thicken, which consequently can make shoes feel uncomfortable.
